Our Story

Miss Rizos was born in 2011 as a blog where its creator, Carolina Contreras, also known as “Miss Rizos”, shared information and resources in Spanish about caring for afro-curly hair. In a short time, Miss Rizos became a movement throughout social media that celebrated, educated and empowered Dominican women and other countries to love themselves just as they are. In 2014 Miss Rizos opened her first salon, an idea that arose from a need in the market to have a space dedicated specifically to curly hair care without the application of chemicals or heat.

The salon creates the sustainability for all the social impact activities that are carried out with girls and women across the country, allowing Miss Rizos to become a social enterprise with an innovative, diverse and dynamic team who through beauty, education and empowerment hope to continue changing the world one curl at a time.

The Team

Carolina Contreras CEO

Carolina Contreras was born in the Dominican Republic but raised in the United States. Upon graduating from college, she returned to her native country to rediscover her “roots” but never imagined that Miss Rizos would be born in that process. Carolina is a graduate of Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and the American University in Aix-en-Provence in France where she obtained the degrees of Political Science and French. She’s passionate about social change and her greatest goal is to be able to leave the world better than she found it. Likewise, she plans to continue learning from everything life has to teach. Her favorite activities are eating, traveling, learning languages, knitting, walking on the beach at sunrise or sunset, sharing, dancing, a good coffee or a glass of wine, taking photos, reading, writing, loving and dreaming without limits.

Nikol Ramírez CMO

Nikol’s in charge of everything related to communication in Miss Rizos. She joins the brands right at the beginning and has been there during the whole growth and evolution. In her teenage years, she recognized the power of images and words, from which sprang a love for design and communication. Her inspiration comes from literature, music, painting, people, and the sea. She considers herself a free soul, entreprenurial, a defender of equity, and a citizen of the world.

Winnie Valerio

Winnie is our dedicated and passionate Salon Administrator. With her Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising from The City College of New York, she was able to work and gain experience within the Human Resources field. Early this year, she decided to go all in with Miss Rizos and what the brand stands for. Women empowerment is important to her and she’s happy to be able to do that alongside the Miss Rizos team. For fun, she likes to dance, go to the beach and spend time with family and friends. She looks forward to all the beautiful changes that will arise with the opening of Miss Rizos in Washington Heights!

Irving Rivas

TechGnome

Irving is a software developer. He’s behind the scenes looking after the technological infrastructure of the business. Based on the Dominican Republic, he counts Miss Rizos’ mission as one necessary to help society transcend embarrassing flaws in our society, which are partly reflected in (sometimes self-) discriminatory practices around the world.
